Local Breweries

Within the Renfrewshire Branch area of CAMRA there are two small craft real ale breweries.

Houston Brewing CompanyThe Houston Brewing Company is located in the picturesque village of Houston in rural Renfrewshire, an area which has seen significant housing development in recent years with many private estates surrounding the original village.

The Houston Brewing Company is a family business established in 1997 attached to the locally well known Fox and Hounds pub and restaurant, which has been owned by the Wengel family for 23 years. Carl Wengel and his wife Caroline, manage the brewery.

Generally, the Houston Brewing Company's beers are named after Houston area historical places. The beers can be found as guest beers at many pubs across Scotland.

Kelburn Brewing Co.
The Kelburn Brewing Company Limited is based in Barrhead and was formed in October 2001 and commenced brewing in April 2002.

Barrhead is a former Burgh town (the abolition of Scottish burghs was in 1975) within the old Renfrewshire County Council and Renfrew District Council area.

With local government reorganisation and boundary changes in 1995, Barrhead became part of East Renfrewshire Council area. Barrhead is four miles from Paisley town centre.

The Kelburn Brewing Company Ltd., is a family business with all members of the Moore family involved in the successful operation.

Kelburn is owned and run by Derek Moore , his partner Margaret, Derek's daughter Karen and son Ross.

In the mid-1970s, Derek Moore realised that the quality of ale in Renfrewshire left much to be desired and was determined to do something about it.

As a science graduate from the University of Paisley, he had some knowledge of the brewing process and decided to develop this through his experiments in home brewing.

His love and appreciation of good quality real ale caused him to join CAMRA and then form the Renfrewshire Branch in 1981.

Kelburn Brewery Staff

In 1997 Derek was invited to help start the Houston Brewery where he and his son Ross, brewed award winning beers.

Having successfully launched the Houston Brewery for the Wengel family, he decided to do it for himself, launching the Kelburn Brewery in April 2002 with some more award winning beers.

Kelburn Goldihops was voted CAMRA Best Beer of the Year 2002 and Best Beer, CAMRA Ayrshire Beer Festival, Troon, 2002.

Kelburn beers can be found in pubs across Scotland as guest ales and at beer festivals across the UK.
